valorant prime axe

a melee weapon from the game valorant. one of the most iconic in-game skins made a reality. a huge 3D modeling learning experience, made a little easier due to its simple two-color design.

  • the valorant prime axe has been printed in many sizes. as shown, i’ve printed the axe in sizes from 120mm to 300mm sizes.

the original colors of the axe as visualized in valorant are a gold head with a purple handle.

as it is mainly an aesthetic piece, PLA has been used to keep costs down.

  • a purple handle is printed separately from a gold head, which are both glued together with jb weld plastic adhesive. this takes much longer to dry compared to super glue, but creates a much stronger bond.

  • ever since valorant released in its beta stage, my friends and i have had a huge interest in it. wanting to create something for them, i designed and printed a couple mini versions of the prime axe to give to them. i also printed a couple tomahawk-sized prime axes in different colorways.

  • finding files of the 3d model would have been so easy, but i decided i wanted to model it myself. i probably spent an entire 50 hours staring at the model in-game and looking at promotional photos just so i could see every detail. some designs that i did find online were missing many details that i was able to incorporate into my design.

printing was actually a huge hurdle, as many of the intricate details would be lost depending on print orientation. strength would also be compromised depending on print orientation as well. because of this, i decided on prioritizing detail and printing the axe vertically, as to keep all the detail, but making the axe slightly weaker as the layer lines are shorter.
